Cleveland State Volleyball Picks Up 3-1 Victory At Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Cleveland State volleyball team opened the final week of regular season play Tuesday evening, picking up a 3-1 victory at Purdue Fort Wayne. With the win, the Vikings improve to 15-12 overall this season and 9-7 in #HLVB play.

The Viking offense was led by the duo of Laken Voss (19 kills) and Liberty Torres (15 kills), while Karly Klaer returned to the lineup to post 37 assists and help the Vikings post a .227 hitting percentage.

Voss also led the Viking defense with 16 digs, while Emma Walker added 15 and Klaer chipped in 14.

As a team, Cleveland State finished with 10.0 total blocks, including five from Madison Olinger and four from Torres.

After dropping the first set, the Vikings responded with a 25-22 victory in the second frame to even the match at 1-1.

During the second set both teams traded points throughout the entire frame, until Cleveland State gained a 23-21 edge on a Torres kill. Two points later the Vikings regained a two-point lead at 24-22 on yet another Torres kill, before closing out the frame with back-to-back kills from Torres.

The Vikings were able to carry their momentum into the third set then, as Cleveland State gained a sizable 14-6 advantage on a kill from Klaer midway through the frame. The Vikings were able to hold off a Mastodon run late in the set, gaining set point on a Voss kill before earning the 25-21 third set victory on a Klaer and Ainslie McLaughlin block.

The fourth set was much of the same, as Cleveland State earned a 15-12 advantage midway through the frame following three straight kills from Voss and Olinger. The Vikings then held this lead throughout the remainder of the set, earning the 25-19 victory on back-to-back kills from Torres and Voss.

With the win, the Vikings have secured a spot in the 2023 Horizon League Volleyball Tournament, which will begin on Friday, November 17.

Cleveland State's final matches of the regular season will be on Friday and Saturday, as the Vikings are set to travel to Milwaukee and Green Bay.
