Cleveland State Volleyball Drops Senior Night Matchup Against Oakland

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out the home portion of its schedule Friday evening, dropping a five-set match to Oakland on Senior Day.

Laken Voss finished with a team-best 18 kills, while Liberty Torres added 16 kills. Madalynn Butler added eight kills and Ainslie McLaughlin tallied five.

Abby Miller recorded a double-double with 48 assists and 24 digs.

Emma Walker led the Viking defense with 27 digs, while Laken Voss added 20 and Lesley Marshall chipped in 16.

Butler and McLaughlin both recorded a team-best five blocks, while Madison Olinger added four blocks.

During the opening set the Vikings were able to distance themselves midway through the frame, as a Madison Olinger kill put Cleveland State up 14-10. The Vikings then extended their lead at the 19-13 mark, following back-to-back points on an Olinger and Laken Voss kill.

Cleveland State then closed out the frame on a kill from Liberty Torres, as the Vikings earned a 25-17 first set victory.

Despite dropping the second set, the Vikings responded with a 25-20 win in the second set to gain a 2-1 edge in the match.

The Vikings were once again able to distance themselves midway through the set, as an Ainslie McLaughlin kill put Cleveland State up 13-11.

Cleveland State was then able to earn a 19-14 lead on an Olinger and Torres block, before eventually closing out the frame with a McLaughlin block.

Oakland answered with a 25-16 win in set four, forcing a fifth and deciding set, which the Golden Grizzlies went on to win 15-9 to clinch the five-set victory.

The Vikings will close out regular season play with a trio of matches next week, beginning with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday, November 7.
