Cleveland State Volleyball Returns Home For Trio Of Matches This Week

QUICK SETS
The Cleveland State volleyball team will return to the friendly confines of Woodling Gymnasium for their final homestand of the regular season this week, hosting a trio of matches against IUPUI (Tuesday, October 24), Wright State (Friday, October 27) and Northern Kentucky (Saturday, October 28).

ENTERING THE WEEK...
The Vikings are on a four-match win streak…Cleveland State has won four out of its last five home contests…The Vikings are tied for fourth in the #HLVB standings.

A LOOK AT THE #HLVB STANDINGS
Entering the sixth week of Horizon League play Cleveland State is tied for fourth place in the #HLVB standings with a 7-4 record. The Vikings, who have won four straight league contests, are one of just two teams with a current 4+ match win streak. Cleveland State sits just two matches out of first place, which is currently held by Milwaukee with a 9-2 record.  

HOME-SWEET-HOME
Cleveland State will open its final homestand of the regular season this week, hosting four matches at Woodling Gymnasium over an 11-day span. So far this season, the Vikings stand at 5-4 when playing at home, including picking up wins in each of their last four home contests. 

WALKER TRACKING DOWN 1,000 CAREER DIGS
Entering the week, junior Emma Walker is closing in on 1,000 career digs, currently sitting at 964 digs. As the team's libero, Walker is averaging 5.07 digs per set to rank third among league players, and has recorded 11 20-dig matches so far this season - including a 22-dig performance at RMU last time out.

…VIKING DEFENSE
Emma Walker has been part of a Cleveland State defense that is holding its opponents to a league-best .169 hitting percentage, averaging 16.81 digs per set as a team to rank second in the #HLVB rankings. In addition to Walker, Karly Klaer also ranks in the top-15 individually averaging 2.90 digs per set, while Laken Voss is averaging 2.44 digs per set.

VIKING BLOCK PARTY
Through 22 matches played, the Vikings are one of the best blocking teams in the nation, ranking 13th among Division I teams with 217.0 total team blocks on the year. Cleveland State has tallied double-digit team blocks nine times this season, including 11.0 total blocks at RMU last time out. In addition, the Vikings hold the top three performances among #HLVB teams so far this year with 24.0 blocks against Bucknell, 15.0 blocks against Kent State and 15.0 blocks at Akron. 

KLAER IN THE CSU CAREER RECORD BOOK
Sophomore Karly Klaer enters the week sitting 10th in the CSU Career Record Book with 1,661 assists through 50 matches as a Viking. Klaer, who eclipsed the 1,000-assist mark at Miami (OH) earlier this year, ranks second among league players averaging 9.19 assists per set, while leading the league with 790 total helpers on the year. 

…KLAER WITH THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE
So far this season, Karly Klaer has recorded 15 double-doubles, including eight against Horizon League opponents. Klaer, who leads the team averaging 9.19 assists per set, also ranks second on the team with 2.90 digs per set. Klaer is one of three Vikings to notch a double-double this season, as Laken Voss notched eight and Nia Hall has recorded one. 

TORRES LEADING THE VIKING OFFENSE
Through the first 22 matches, junior Liberty Torres has been leading the Viking offense, averaging 3.21 kills per set on a .240 hitting percentage. Torres, who is one of seven #HLVB players with 270+ kills on the year, ranks fourth with her 3.21 kills per set average. Torres has notched double-digit kill performances in 16 of the 22 matches so far this season, including a pair of 20-kill efforts against RMU (24 kills) and at Oakland (21 kills).

HEAD COACH CHUCK VOSS
Chuck Voss is in his 24th season at the helm of the Vikings, and owns a 406-288 (.585) overall record at Cleveland State. Under Voss the Vikings have recorded 17 winning seasons, including a streak of 10 straight from 2009 to 2018. Cleveland State has eclipsed the 20-win mark eight times since Voss took over the program, and has captured Horizon League Tournament titles five times (2007, 2012, 2015, 2016 & 2017) under his guidance. During the 2016 season Voss became the all-time winningest coach in program history, and earlier this season Voss eclipsed the 400-win mark at Cleveland State with a 3-0 victory at IUPUI (September 19, 2023).
