Cleveland State Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller At Wright State

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out the weekend with a five-set heartbreaker on Saturday, coming up short at Wright State in a 3-2 decision.

Three Vikings finished the match with double-digit kills; Liberty Torres with 15, Madison Olinger with 12 and JeriLynn Koehler with 10.

Karly Klaer finished with 48 assists and 16 digs for yet another double-double on the season.

Defensively, the Vikings were led by the duo of Emma Walker and Laken Voss who both finished with 24 digs, while Reilly Wadden chipped in 11.

As a team, the Vikings finished with 11.0 total blocks, led by Koehler and Olinger with five each.

Throughout the entire first set the two teams traded points until late in the frame, when Cleveland State earned set point at 24-23 on a Laken Voss kill, before putting the frame away with a JeriLynn Koehler kill on the next play for the 25-23 first set win.

Wright State responded with wins in the next two sets, before Cleveland State earned a 25-22 win in the fourth frame to force a fifth and deciding set.

The fourth set was once again a back-and-forth affair, until Cleveland State gained a late 22-20 lead on back-to-back points from a Liberty Torres kill and a Karly Klaer service ace. The Vikings then held their advantage over the next few plays, earning a 24-21 set point on a Wright State error, before closing out the frame with a Voss kill.

The two teams once again traded points throughout the entire fifth set, until Wright State was able to earn the 15-13 fifth set victory and claim the 3-2 match win.

The Vikings will close out their current roadswing next weekend, traveling to Oakland on Friday, October 6.
