Cleveland State Volleyball Earns 3-1 Victory Over YSU

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday, improving to 8-6 on the season and 2-1 in #HLVB play.

JeriLynn Koehler posted a team-best 12 kills on the day, while Laken Voss added 10.

The Cleveland State defense was led by Emma Walker with 25 digs, while Ayva Leon tallied 14 and Reilly Wadden chipped in 12.

As a team, the Vikings combined for seven service aces, including three each from Leon and Voss.

During the opening set, the Vikings were able to gain a sizable lead midway through the frame, as back-to-back points on a YSU error and Madison Olinger and Liberty Torres block put the Vikings up 17-11.

Cleveland State then held off a late Penguin run, gaining a 24-21 edge on another YSU error, before closing out the 25-23 first set victory.

The Penguins responded with a win in the second set, but Cleveland State answered with a 25-20 third set victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

After gaining a 15-11 lead on a Karly Klaer kill midway through the frame, the Vikings had to once again hold off a late YSU run, notching the final three points of the set on a pair of kills from Laken Voss and Nia Hall and an Ayva Leon service ace.

The two teams then played a back-and-forth start to the fourth set, until Cleveland State went on a 4-0 run to gain a 13-8 edge on a JeriLynn Koehler kill. The Vikings then held a multi-point lead for the rest of the frame, gaining set point on a YSU error and clinching the 25-18 set victory on a Voss kill.

Cleveland State will close out its current hometsand on Tuesday, September 26, hosting Purdue Fort Wayne at 6:00 p.m.
