Cleveland State Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match Against Bucknell

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out play in the Holiday Inn Cleveland Clinic CSU Invitational Saturday, dropping a five-set match against Bucknell.

The Vikings posted 24.0 total team blocks on the match, including nine from from JeriLynn Koehler, eight from Nia Hall and seven from Karly Klaer.

The trio of Nia Hall (13 kills), Laken Voss (12) and Liberty Torres (11) paced the Viking offense, while Klaer recorded 44 assists on the match.

Emma Walker posted 32 digs, while Klaer finished with 15 digs, Lesley Marshall added 12 and Voss chipped in 10.

After dropping the first set, the Vikings responded with a 25-23 victory during the second frame to even the match at 1-1. Despite trailing early on in the frame, the Vikings were able to gain a 14-13 lead on a JeriLynn Koehler kill midway through the set, before extending their lead to 22-19 on a Bucknell error.

The Vikings then gained set point on a Koehler and Madalynn Butler block, before closing out the frame with a Laken Voss kill.

Cleveland State carried its momentum into the third set then, as the Vikings gained a 2-1 edge in the match with a 27-25 set win.

After holding a sizable advantage midway through the frame at 17-12, the Vikings were able to hold onto their lead throughout the next part of the frame, gaining a 23-20 edge on a Koehler kill. Cleveland State then gained its first set point at 24-21 on a Madalynn Butler kill, before a Bucknell run closed the gap to 24-24.

The Vikings responded with a Voss kill, before Bucknell once again evened the set at 25-25, but back-to-back points from Cleveland State on a Liberty Torres kill and a Koehler and Karly Klaer block closed out the frame.

Bucknell was then able to pick up a win in the fourth set, forcing a fifth and deciding frame, where the Bison earned a 15-13 win to capture the five-set victory.

Cleveland State will close out its current homestand on Thursday, September 14, hosting Kent State at 6:00 p.m.
