Cleveland State Volleyball Picks Up 3-0 Victory At IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Cleveland State volleyball team opened its final weekend of regular season play Friday evening, earning a 3-0 sweep at IUPUI.

The Viking offense was led by the trio of Lydia Latimer, Madalynn Butler and Laken Voss each posting seven kills, while Karly Klaer posted 22 assists as Cleveland State tallied a .264 hitting percentage.

Emma Walker notched a team-best 11 digs, with Audrey McConihe adding nine and Klaer chipping in eight digs.

As a team, the Vikings combined for eight service aces on the night, including three from Latimer.

Cleveland State combined for 11.0 total blocks against IUPUI, with four from Latimer and Madison Olinger and three from Klaer.

During the opening set, the Vikings were able to jump out to a 7-1 lead following five straight kills to force an early IUPUI timeout. Although the Jaguars were able to stop the scoring run out of the timeout, the Vikings responded with a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 11-2.

Cleveland State then controlled the momentum over the next stretch, as back-to-back points on a Madalynn Butler block and kill put the Vikings up 19-7 to force another IUPUI timeout. Cleveland State then went on to capture a 25-13 first set victory on a Madison Olinger kill.

The second set was much of the same, as the Vikings once again got out to an early 7-1 lead following a Lydia Latimer kill and IUPUI error. Cleveland State then rattled off four straight points to extend its lead to double-digits at 17-7, before the Vikings closed the frame with three straight kills from Latimer, Karly Klaer and Liberty Torres to capture the 25-11 win.

During the third set the two teams traded points until midway through the frame when the Vikings used a 5-0 run to gain an 18-10 lead following an Emma Walker ace and IUPUI error.

Cleveland State was then able to fend off a late IUPUI run, with a trio of Laken Voss points giving the Vikings a 22-18 edge late in the frame. Despite another run from the Jaguars, the Vikings were able to earn set-point on a Butler kill, before capturing the 25-22 third set win on a Voss kill.
