Cleveland State Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker At League-Leading Wright State

FAIRBORN, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking match at league-leading Wright State Saturday, falling to the first place Raiders in five sets.

Offensively, the Vikings were led by Lydia Latimer with 13 kills, while Laken Voss added 12 and Liberty Torres recorded 10. Karly Klaer finished with 42 assists on the match.

Sarah DeGeorge recorded a team-best 15 digs, while Audrey McConihe and Voss added 14 and Emma Walker chipped in 12.

The Vikings combined for nine service aces on the match, including two from Walker, Klaer, Voss, and DeGeorge.

As a team, Cleveland State combined for 11.0 total blocks against the Raiders, including eight from Latimer and six from Voss.

After trailing throughout the start of the first set, the Vikings were able to use a 4-0 run midway through the frame to gain a 15-11 lead on a Laken Voss and Lydia Latimer block. Although Wright State was able to stop the scoring run, the Vikings were able to regain a four-point lead at the 18-14 mark on a Latimer kill.

Cleveland State then went on to hold a multi-point lead throughout the remainder of the frame, earning the 25-21 first set win on a pair of kills from Voss and Latimer.

After Wright State picked up a convincing win in the second set to even the match, the two teams played a tightly contest third frame, with Cleveland State earning a 25-23 third set win.

During the third set the Vikings played from behind until late in the frame, when four straight points put Cleveland State up 21-18 on a Liberty Torres kill. The Vikings then held off a late Wright State run, before gaining set point on a Voss kill and closing out the set with another kill from Voss.

Wright State then picked up a win in the fourth set, forcing a fifth and deciding frame. Cleveland State was able to get out to a quick 4-1 lead in the final set, before extending its advantage to 7-3 following a Torres kill and a Voss service ace.

Although the Raiders closed the lead to just two points at 9-7, the Vikings were able to regain a four-point lead a few plays later, earning a 12-8 advantage on back-to-back points from a Voss kill and a Wright State error.

Cleveland State was then able to hold the advantage over the next few points – even gaining set-point on a Latimer kill at 14-11 – before the Raiders responded with five straight points to come-from-behind for the 16-14 fifth set victory.
