Cleveland State Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match Against Purdue Fort Wayne

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team returned to Woodling Gymnasium to begin a three-match homestand Friday evening, dropping a hard-fought five-set match against Purdue Fort Wayne.

Offensively, the duo of Lydia Latimer and Laken Voss both tallied 12 kills, while Madalynn Butler added eight.

Karly Klaer recorded 33 assists and a team-high 15 digs for her ninth double-double of the season, while Emma Walker added 13 digs and Sarah DeGeorge tallied 12.

As a team, the Vikings combined for nine service aces, including three from Klaer and two from Walker and DeGeorge.

After dropping the first set, the Vikings were able to even the match with a 25-23 victory during the second frame.

Cleveland State was able to open the frame on a 7-1 run, including a pair of Sarah DeGeorge service aces. The Vikings were then able to hold off a Mastodon run midway through the set, gaining a 16-11 advantage following a 5-2 run.

The Vikings were able to control play throughout the rest of the frame then, earning a set point on a Madalynn Butler and Lydia Latimer block, before closing out the frame on a Purdue Fort Wayne error.

During the third set, the Vikings were once again able to get out to a quick lead, earning a 9-3 advantage on a Karly Klaer kill and a Latimer block. Cleveland State was then able to extend its lead to 14-6 following a trio of Mastodon errors, before extending its lead once again at the 19-9 mark following a pair of blocks and an Emma Walker service ace.

The Vikings then cruised through the remainder of the frame, closing out the 25-11 third set victory with back-to-back kills from Latimer.

Purdue Fort Wayne was then able to pick up a 26-24 win during the fourth set, forcing a fifth and deciding frame, in which the Mastodons picked up a 15-9 victory to earn the five-set match win.
