Cleveland State Volleyball Sweeps Oakland

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team returned to Woodling Gymnasium Saturday afternoon, picking up a 3-0 sweep over Oakland.

The Viking offense was led by Laken Voss with 13 kills, while Lydia Latimer finished with nine kills.

Emma Walker stepped in as the libero against Oakland, finishing with a team-high 18 digs, while Sarah DeGeorge added 13 and Laken Voss tallied 11.

Karly Klaer notched 32 assists on the day, helping the Vikings post a .231 hitting percentage.

As a team, the Vikings combined for 12 service aces, including five from Sarah DeGeorge.

During the opening set, the Vikings were able to get out to an early 7-2 lead following a Voss kill and Voss service ace. The Vikings were then able to hold the advantage until late in the frame, when Oakland tied the set at 17-17.

The two teams then traded points over the next few plays, until the Vikings finally earned set-point at 25-24 on a Walker service ace. Cleveland State then earned the 26-24 first set victory on an Oakland error.

During the second set, the Vikings were able to gain a sizeable lead midway through the frame following four straight points to put the score at 13-9 on back-to-back aces from DeGeorge. Cleveland State then controlled play throughout the remainder of the frame, earning the 25-21 second set victory on a Latimer solo block.

Cleveland State then picked up a convincing 25-8 victory during the third set. The Vikings rattled off 11 straight points to gain a 14-1 lead, before going on to hold the Grizzlies to single-digits, and capturing the three-set victory on another Voss kill and a McConihe service ace.
