Cleveland State Volleyball Earns 3-1 Victory Over Morgan State in Home Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team opened up its 2022 home slate Friday evening, earning a 3-1 victory over Morgan State.

Lydia Latimer and Laken Voss both tallied 10 kills to lead the Viking offense, while Karly Klaer finished with 33 assists on the match. Liberty Torres added nine kills for Cleveland State, while Klaer chipped in seven.

Sarah DeGeorge led the Viking defense with 13 digs, while Audrey McConihe and Laken Voss both tallied eight.

As a team, the Vikings recorded 14 service aces on the match, including six from Sarah DeGeorge.

Cleveland State recorded 13.0 total blocks against the Bears, with eight coming from Latimer and four from Madison Olinger and Voss.

During the opening set the Vikings were able to earn an early 7-3 lead on a Lydia Latimer kill, before extending their advantage to 15-8 midway through the frame on a kill from Madison Olinger.

Cleveland State was then able to carry the momentum through the end of the frame, closing out the set with seven straight points for the 25-16 set win.

The second set was much of the same, as the Vikings earned a 13-4 lead on a Liberty Torres kill midway through the frame, and went on to hold Morgan State to single digits on the frame, as the Vikings posted three of the last four points to earn the 25-9 victory.

After dropping the third set, the Vikings responded by earning a convincing 25-13 victory during the fourth frame to earn the home opening victory. The Vikings were able to distance themselves midway through the frame, when a 4-0 run put Cleveland State up 15-9 to force a Morgan State timeout.

Out of the timeout, the Vikings were able to score four out of the next five points, gaining a 19-10 advantage on back-to-back kills from Torres. Cleveland State then controlled play throughout the remainder of the frame, closing out the set on a Voss and Olinger block.
