Cleveland State Volleyball Extends Win Streak To Four Straight Matches

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team extended its current win streak to four straight matches Friday evening, picking up a 3-0 victory over Oakland. With the win, the Vikings improve to 6-9 overall this season, and remain perfect in the Horizon League with a 4-0 record.

Entering the match, Cleveland State and Oakland were tied for the lead in the #HLVB standings with 3-0 records, with the Vikings earning the edge in the standings before all matches were finished on Friday.

Playing with an adjusted offensive lineup, the Vikings were led by the trio of Peyton Bloomer, London Portis and Erica Kostelac, as this trio combined for 31 of Cleveland State's 42 kills on the match. Bloomer posted a team-high 11 kills for her fourth straight double-digit kill performance, while Portis and Kostelac each recorded 10 kills.

Abby Miller finished with 24 assists, eight digs and seven kills on the match, helping the Vikings post a .264 hitting percentage as a team.

Audrey McConihe led the Viking defense with 15 digs, while Halayna Kesling added nine and Sarah DeGeorge tallied seven.

The Vikings combined for nine service aces on the match, including three from Miller.

During the first set, the Vikings were able to gain an early lead at the 5-1 mark on a Miller service ace, and then extended their lead to 15-5 following five straight Viking points that ended with a Miller kill. The Vikings then controlled play throughout the remainder of the frame, earning the 25-12 first set victory on a Kostelac kill.

The two teams traded points throughout the beginning of the second set then, until the Vikings tallied back-to-back points on an Oakland error and Kostelac kill to gain a 15-11 advantage. The Vikings were able to hold a sizeable lead over the next few plays, before Oakland rallied back late in the frame to tie the set at 22-22. The two teams traded points over the next few plays then, until the Vikings were able to capitalize on their second set point of the frame with a Kostelac kill to close out the 26-24 set.

The third set was much like the second, as the two teams traded points over the beginning of the frame, until a 6-0 run from the Vikings gave CSU an 11-5 advantage on another Miller kill. Cleveland State was then able to hold the momentum throughout the remainder of the frame, posting the final four points of the set, including a DeGeorge service ace and Miller kill, for the 25-16 third set victory.

The Vikings will continue their current five-match homestand next week, hosting Milwaukee on Thursday, October 7.
