Volleyball Picks Up 3-0 Sweep Over Youngstown State

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team opened up its final homestand of the 2021 season Monday evening, posting a 3-0 sweep over Youngstown State. With the win, the Vikings improve to 8-7 on the year.

Match Stats
· Chelsea Penfield led the Vikings with eight total kills on the match, while Hannah Greene, Emily DeGeorge, London Portis, and Peyton Bloomer all posted seven kills.
· Abby Miller recorded 34 assists on Cleveland State's 39 kills.
· Three Vikings finished with double-digit digs, led by Audrey McConihe with 13. Emily DeGeorge added 12 and Abby Miller finished with 11.
· As a team, Cleveland State combined for eight service aces, including four from Halle Schoen.
· London Portis finished with a team-best four blocks, while Hannah Greene and Chelsea Penfield both added three.

Match Notes
· Audrey McConihe served as Cleveland State's libero Monday evening.
· With her three block assists against the Penguins, Hannah Greene moved into seventh place in the CSU Career Record Book with 388 total blocks.
· Abby Miller finished with 34 assists and 11 digs to notch her ninth double-double of the season.
· Halle Schoen posted a career-high with her four service aces.

The Match
After a back-and-forth start to the opening set, Cleveland State was able to gain control of the frame following back-to-back points on a Hannah Greene kill and YSU error, gaining an 18-17 advantage late in the set. The Vikings were then able to carry this momentum throughout the rest of the frame, posting two of the final three points to pick up the 25-21 first set victory.

During the second frame, the Vikings were able to get out to a quick 6-3 advantage, and went on to maintain a lead for the remainder of the set. Midway through the frame, the Vikings went on a 5-0 run to gain a 15-10 advantage on a Peyton Bloomer kill. The Vikings then closed out the set with kills from Emily DeGeorge and Chelsea Penfield, earning the 25-15 set victory.

The third set was much of the same then, as the Vikings got out to an 8-3 lead, and then maintained control for the remainder of the frame. Midway through the set, the Vikings were able to extend their lead to 18-8 following a Greene and London Portis block and a Halle Schoen service ace. Cleveland State then closed out the 25-12 third set victory with a Portis kill, picking up its sixth 3-0 sweep of the season.
