Vikings Fall At League-Leading Wright State, 3-1

FAIRBORN, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team opened up its final road trip of the 2021 regular season Monday evening, dropping a 3-1 match against league-leading Wright State. The Vikings now stand at 7-6 on the year.

Match Stats
Hannah Greene finished with a team-high 17 kills on the night, while Emily DeGeorge, London Portis and Peyton Bloomer all posted eight kills.
Abby Miller recorded 42 assists on the match.
• Five Vikings finished with double-digit digs against Wright State, led by Emily DeGeorge with 19. Audrey McConihe and Caroline Kucia added 18 digs, while Abby Miller recorded 12 and Lindsey Tout finished with 10 digs.
Hannah Greene posted five total blocks on the match, while Chelsea Penfield added four.

Match Notes
Hannah Greene tied her season-high with the 17 kills against the Raiders, and has now posted double-digit kills in seven straight matches.
• Freshman Caroline Kucia set a career-high with her 18 digs on the night.
Abby Miller posted her seventh double-double of the season with 42 assists and 12 digs on the night.

The Match
After dropping the first set, the Vikings were able to even the match following the second frame, as they were able to pick up a 26-24 second set victory.

Cleveland State was able to get out to an early 5-1 lead in the frame, and then extended this lead to 10-5 following a Hannah Greene kill. Although Wright State was able to work its way back into the set, the Vikings were able to once again extend their lead to 22-16 following a Chelsea Penfield solo block, and then earned a set point opportunity at 24-19 on a London Portis kill. 

The Raiders were able to fend of five set points though, as they knotted the frame at 24-24 with a 5-0 run, but back-to-back points from the Vikings on a pair of kills from Portis and Peyton Bloomer gave Cleveland State the 26-24 second set victory.

Despite trailing early on during the third set, the Vikings were able to battle their way back into the frame, posting a 6-1 run midway through the set to tie the score at 14-14 after forcing three straight Wright State errors. The two teams traded points over the next few plays then, as the Vikings were once again able to knot the score at 22-22 on a Greene kill. 

A few points later, Cleveland State was able to fend off a WSU set point with a Raider error, but Wright State would go on to post three of the final four points to claim the 27-25 third set victory.

The Raiders were then able to pick up a 25-14 fourth set victory to claim the 3-1 match win.
