CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team returned to Woodling Gymnasium for its first #HLVB homestand of the 2019 season Friday, dropping a hard fought five-set match against league-leading Milwaukee.

Offensively, the Vikings were led by the trio of Hannah Greene, Trinniti Hall and Peyton Bloomer, with Greene notching 17 kills, Hall posting 16 and Bloomer adding 10.

Christina Grecol recorded 55 assists on the night, helping the Vikings to a .230 hitting percentage as a team.

The Vikings tallied nine total service aces on the match, including three from Grecol and Emily DeGeorge, while Hall posted two.

The Viking defense was led by Emily DeGeorge and Audrey McConihe who both tallied 19 digs on the match, while Lindsey Tout posted 16 digs as the libero and Halle Schoen added 13 total digs.

As a team, the Vikings posted 15.0 total blocks, marking the seventh time this season that CSU has combined for 10+ blocks as a team.

Individually, Greene posted 11 total blocks, while Bloomer added five and DeGeorge and Hall recorded four.

The Vikings came out strong during the opening set against a Milwaukee team that entered the match with a 15-1 overall record, gaining a sizeable 15-10 lead midway through the frame on a Bloomer kill. The Vikings were then able to fend off a Milwaukee comeback at the 19-18 mark, and went on to post the final three points of the frame to earn the 25-20 first set victory.

The Panthers responded during the second set, evening the match at 1-1, before the Vikings bounced back for a 25-16 victory during the third frame.

The Vikings were once again able to gain a sizeable advantage midway through the third set, jumping out to a 15-9 lead following a Bloomer kill. The Vikings then controlled play for the remainder of the frame, closing out the set by posting three of the final four points on a trio of kills from Greene, DeGeorge and Bloomer.

Milwaukee was once again able to rebound in the next set, forcing a fifth and deciding frame.

After the Panthers were able to get out to a quick lead in the final frame, the Vikings battled back to tie the set at 10-10 after a Greene solo block, and then traded points with Milwaukee over the next few plays, tying the set two more times before the Panthers were finally able to post back-to-back points to earn the 15-13 fifth set victory.
