Volleyball Picks Up Wins Against Butler & Charlotte

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team picked up its first wins of the 2019 campaign Friday, notching back-to-back wins over Butler and Charlotte to begin the Hampton Inn Bowling Green Invitational.

The Vikings posted their first win of the 2019 campaign in the Hampton Inn Bowling Green Invitational opener Friday morning, posting a 3-2 victory over Butler.

Three Vikings finished the match with double-digit kills, led by Trinniti Hall who recorded 19 on a .400 hitting percentage (19-3-40). Hannah Greene posted 16 kills – just one off her career-high – while Emily DeGeorge chipped in 10.

Christina Grecol led the offense with 54 assists on the match, marking the fifth 50+ assist match of her career. Grecol also added 14 digs against Butler, posting her second double-double of the 2019 campaign.

Along with Grecol, four other Vikings posted double-digit dig performances, including a career-high 21 from Lindsey Tout and 20 from DeGeorge. Audrey McConihe and Julia Piccolino both added 13 digs for the Vikings.

As a team, Cleveland State posted 15.0 total blocks, led by Greene with seven and London Portis with a career-best six.

The Vikings were also strong from the service line against Butler, posting eight aces on the match, with three from Hall and two from McConihe.

After dropping the first set, the Vikings stormed back during the second frame, earning a convincing 25-7 victory to even the match at one set apiece.

The Bulldogs were then able to win the third frame, but the Vikings responded with another strong showing in the following set to force a fifth and deciding frame.

Both teams traded points to begin the final set, until a 6-0 Viking run gave the Vikings match-point at 14-8. During this stretch, the Vikings got points from Greene & Portis kills, a pair of CSU blocks, and a pair of Butler errors.

Although the Bulldogs were able to notch the next two points, the Vikings were able to finally put the match away with another Portis kill to pick up the 3-2 victory.

The Vikings remained perfect on the day with a 3-0 sweep of Charlotte in their second match at the Hampton Inn Bowling Green Invitational, improving to 2-3 on the young season. 

For the second straight match the Viking offense was led by the duo of Trinniti Hall and Hannah Greene, as Hall posted 23 kills for her first 20-kill match of the year, and Greene recorded 16 kills.

Defensively, Julia Piccolino and Lindsey Tout recorded a team-best 16 digs, while Emily DeGeorge added 14.

As a team, the Vikings posted a .309 hitting percentage against Charlotte, with Hall posting an individual clip of .500 (23-4-38) and Greene recording a .407 hitting percentage (16-5-27).
