Skeens Named Horizon League Offensive Player Of The Week

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After helping the Cleveland State volleyball team clinch its second straight Horizon League Regular Season Championship, freshman outside hitter Sara Skeens has been named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week. The honor is the first for Skeens, and the sixth weekly accolade for the Vikings this season.

Last time out, Skeens and the Vikings picked up back-to-back 3-0 sweeps against Oakland and Youngstown State, as Cleveland State improved its overall record to 22-4 this season and 13-1 in league play. With the 3-0 victory against the Penguins on Sunday, the Vikings earned the title of Horizon League Regular Season Champions and extended their winstreak to 13 straight matches – a mark that ties the program record for longest winstreak under head coach Chuck Voss.

For the weekend, Skeens averaged 3.50 kills per set and posted a .326 hitting percentage (21-6-46). The Wooster, Ohio native tallied a team-high 10 kills at Oakland, and followed that up with an 11-kill performance against Youngstown State. Skeens has now tallied 13 double-digit kill matches this season, including eight against Horizon League opponents.

Skeens was an integral part of a Viking offense that tallied a .358 clip throughout the two matches, including a season-high hitting percentage of .412 against YSU. For the season, Cleveland State is tops in the league with a .253 hitting percentage, while also leading the league averaging 13.94 kills per set.

For the season, Skeens has tallied 218 total kills and is averaging 2.53 kills per set. Among Horizon League players, Skeens is one of just three freshmen to reach the 200-kill milestone, joining the Milwaukee duo of Bridget Wallenberger and Kylie Wilks.
