CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team continued Horizon League action Friday evening, falling to Oakland in three sets. With the loss CSU falls to 12-10 overall this season and 2-7 in league play, while Oakland improves to 11-14 (5-5).
Set scores against Oakland were 23-25, 22-25, 23-25.
Kerry Winchester led the Viking offense with eight kills against the Grizzlies, while Christina Toth added seven and Maggie Hannon posted five. Nikki Holmes had a team-high 18 digs, while Grace Kauth added 12. Hannon and Kelly Kiger led the Vikings with four blocks each.
The Vikings were able to fight off multiple set-points throughout the match, including two during the second set when CSU posted back-to-back points on a Kauth kill and an Oakland error. Despite being able to hold off the Grizzlies on multiple set-points, the Vikings went into the third set trailing 2-0.
Cleveland State was able to jump out to a seven-point lead (16-9) during the third frame after posting five straight points - including kills from Toth and Winchester and an Annie Djukic service ace. The Vikings were able to hold at least a three-point advantage for the majority of the frame, until Oakland crept back in going on a 7-1 run to tie the match at 20-20. CSU then had to play from behind for the remainder of the frame, holding off the Grizzlies once again on a set-point, but Oakland was eventually able to put the set away on an OU kill.
The Vikings will close out their three-match homestand tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 2), hosting Wright State at 4:00 p.m.
