Distance Medley Relay Finishes Fifth At YSU National Invitational

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's track and field team competed for the first time during the 2017 season Friday, kicking off action at the Youngstown National Invitational.

On the first day of the two-day meet Cleveland State participated in two races – the 500 Meter Dash and the Distance Medley Relay.

Cleveland State's best performance came in the Distance Medley Relay, as the Viking 'A' team of Karen Barrientos, Bridget Smik, Olivia Hammons, and Samantha Butterbaugh finished fifth in a time of 12:50.37. The Vikings finished ahead of Horizon League opponent Youngstown State, and right behind Oakland and Detroit in the event.

The Vikings also ran a second relay team in the Distance Medley Relay, with the quartet of Jessica Finley, Danielle Yasenchack, Anna Beasley, and Andrea Wardeiner finishing 10th in a time of 14:32.13.

Sophomore Alexandria Derkacs was Cleveland State's lone competitor in the 500 Meter Dash, finishing 22nd in a time of 1:23.93.

Day two of the Youngstown National Invitational will start with field events at 10:00 a.m. followed by running events at 1:00 p.m.
