CLEVELAND - The Cleveland State women's tennis team battled with Pittsburgh for over three hours but came out on the short end of a 6-1 decision on Thursday at the River Oaks Racquet Club in Rocky River, Ohio. The Vikings fall to 7-12 on the year with the loss heading into a key Horizon League match with Detroit on Friday (March 26).

"This match would have been a bonus for us this weekend had we won it," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We have the talent to win a match like this, but it was still going to be an upset. We kept scrapping away and hanging in with them, but it was not to be today."

Sarah Galon collected her 12th win of the year, defeating Pitt's Becky Emmers, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Galon and Morgan Ungerott also teamed up to record their sixth straight win as the top doubles pairing, defeating Hayley Hughes and Anne Davies, 8-0.

"Sarah and Morgan are playing really well together," Etzkin said. "They're buying into the whole doubles skill and not just trying to win on their singles skills like so many college players do. Sarah's starting to separate herself from other players in our region."

The Vikings will head to Detroit for a key Horizon League matchup on Friday. The winner has the inside track on finishing fifth in the league, which would tie Cleveland State for the best conference finish in school history. Cleveland State will then face Oakland on Saturday afternoon.

"Detroit's had similar team results as we have had, so it should be a good match," Etzkin said. "We'll have our opportunities to win, we just have to cash in on them. We're going to be bringing the same intensity we'd have in the league tournament into tomorrow's match."
