ORLANDO, Fla. - The Cleveland State women's tennis team picked up a split of its two matches on Monday, defeating William Jewell College in the morning, 6-1, before falling to Long Island in a tough, 4-3 matchup in the afternoon. The Vikings move to 7-10 on the year with the split on Monday.
"We're playing pretty well, right now, and obviously we're happy to be 2-1 at this point," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We definitely played our best so far this spring in the loss to Long Island. We're starting to play to our potential and realize how far we can go."
Paulina Reyes picked up three wins for the Vikings, winning both of her singles matches and going 1-1 in doubles. Against William Jewell College, she defeated Ashley Walker in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, then turned around and beat Long Island's Krystina Bachner, 6-4, 6-4.
Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott also went 3-1 on the day with two of their wins coming in doubles play. The pair combined to defeat Long Island's Veronica Apostu-Efremov and Krystina Bachner, 8-3, after defeating Laura Curry and Ashley Walker of William Jewell College, 8-4. Galon also defeated Curry in singles play, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-4, while Ungerott defeated Kayla Barr, 6-0, 6-0.
"We didn't give up at all today in the second match, but this loss hurts a little bit," Etzkin said. "We'd been winning a lot of close matches, and it wasn't that we didn't try or were tired, we just lost a bunch of close points."
The Vikings close out the spring break trip with a match on Tuesday against Fairfield at noon.
