CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland State women's tennis team got exactly what they were looking for Saturday, earning their first and second wins of the spring season with 6-1 victories over St. Francis (PA) and Case Western Reserve.
CSU might have completed a clean 7-0 sweep of the matches had it not been forced to forfeit the match at No. 6 singles due to a shorthanded lineup.
Sophomores Melissa Holzinger and Myra Pepino did not give up a single point in either of their singles or doubles matches against the two teams.
Collectively, the Vikings won each singles match in straight sets, putting together a true team effort in setting the tone for the remainder of their five-match homestand.
"Shorthanded as we were, we entered this match as the favored team," said CSU coach Brian Etzkin. "We got a chance to focus on point construction and really play to the best of our ability.
"As a team we are happy to get these first couple wins under our belt, and we respect the effort of our opponents."
Cleveland State will be back on the court Sunday, Feb. 1, when it hosts St. Bonaventure. Women's play begins at 2:00 p.m.
