Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Opens #HLTennis Play With 5-2 Win Over Youngstown State

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened its Horizon League slate Saturday, earning a 5-2 victory over Youngstown State. With the win, the Vikings are now 9-8 overall this year and 1-0 in #HLTennis play.

"This was a great way to start the Horizon League slate," head coach Frank Polito said. "We pulled out a tough win today, and I'm proud of the effort the team had on the court. We got off a strong start in doubles, and were able to carry that momentum into singles play. We still have some work to do, but I'm looking forward to seeing what this team can accomplish over the next few weeks."

The Vikings were able to secure the doubles point against Youngstown State, picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. At the top of the lineup, Oihane Vicario and Sima Heren earned a 7-6(2) win, while Tereze Vevere and Ella Franz posted a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot.

With their win at No. 3 doubles, Vevere and Franz set a CSU single-season record with 23 doubles wins on the year.

Vicario added to Cleveland State's lead to begin singles play then, as she posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory at the top of the lineup, while Franz earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles to put the Vikings up 3-0.

Cleveland State's clinching point came from Bethany Yauch at No. 4 singles, as she earned a 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-1 win to give the Vikings the first Horizon League win of the year.

Although Youngstown State was able to pick up wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, The Vikings put the final point on the board, as Vevere earned a 7-6(5), 4-6, 1-0(2) victory at No. 3 singles.

The Vikings will continue their #HLTennis slate on the road next weekend, traveling to Milwaukee on Saturday, April 6 and Chicago State on Sunday, April 7.
