Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Set To Host Toledo; Travel To Eastern Michigan

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team will continue the 2024 spring slate with a pair of matches this weekend, hosting Toledo on Friday, February 2 and traveling to Eastern Michigan on Sunday, February 4. 

Last Time Out…
The Vikings remained perfect on the season, picking up wins at Ball State (6-1) and Dayton (4-3), improving to 3-0 this year.   

Vikings At The MMTP
Friday's match against Toledo will be the home opener for the Vikings, and the first of 11 scheduled home matches for Cleveland State this spring. Last season, Cleveland State posted a 7-2 record when playing at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion – the home to Viking Tennis for the last nine years. 

Vicario Named #HLTennis Singles Player of the Week
Earlier this week junior Oihane Vicario was named the Horizon League Singles Player of the Week, picking up the 11th weekly accolade of her career. Vicario notched a pair of come-from-behind wins at No. 1 singles against Ball State and Dayton, including the clinching point in the 4-3 victory over the Flyers.  

…And Records 50th Career Singles Win
Oihane Vicario's 3-6, 7-5, 1-0(3) victory at the top of the singles lineup against Ball State marked the 50th singles win of her career, as she became the third active Viking with 50+ wins and the 19th Viking all-time to reach the milestone. Vicario, who has played all of her matches at the top of the singles lineup for the Vikings, has recorded 20-win campaigns in each of her first two seasons at Cleveland State.  

Heren & Yauch Pick Up #HLTennis Doubles Team of the Week Honors
The Vikings swept the Horizon League weekly honors this week, with Sima Heren and Bethany Yauch picking up #HLTennis Doubles Team of the Week accolades. The duo went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles last weekend, helping the Vikings clinch the doubles point against Ball State and Dayton. For the season, Heren and Yauch now stand at 11-5 in doubles play. 

…And Move Up CSU Doubles Wins List
With the two wins last week, Sima Heren and Bethany Yauch moved up the CSU Doubles Wins List, entering this weekend tied for seventh with 24 career wins as a duo. As one of two Viking teams with double-digit wins on the year – standing at 11-5 through the first two weeks of the spring season – Heren and Yauch are just three wins shy of moving into sixth place on the list. 

…Franz & Vevere On CSU Doubles Wins List
In addition to Sima Heren and Bethany Yauch, the Cleveland State doubles team of Ella Franz and Tereze Vevere are also on the CSU Doubles Wins List, currently sitting fifth with 28 career wins. Franz and Vevere have a team-best 12-2 record on the season, and own a perfect 2-0 mark at No. 3 doubles this spring.  

#HLTennis Preseason Poll
Earlier this month the Vikings were selected as the preseason favorite in the Horizon League Poll, picking up 46 points and four first-place votes. This marks the first time that the Vikings were selected at the top of the preseason poll, while it marks the fifth time that Cleveland State has been tabbed to finish in the top-two. 

Head Coach Frank Polito
Frank Polito is in his sixth year at the helm of the Vikings and his 12th year overall at Cleveland State, owning a 63-45 dual match record as head coach. During Polito's tenure, the Vikings have captured four Regular Season Horizon League titles and have made three #HLTennis Championship Match appearances.
