Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Travels To Valparaiso To Open Spring Slate

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team will begin the 2024 spring season this weekend, traveling to Valparaiso for its lone match on opening weekend. The Vikings will face Valparaiso in a 3:00 p.m. match on Saturday, January 20.

This weekend's match will be the first of 22 scheduled matches for the Vikings this spring, including the first of three contests over the final two weeks of January.

Cleveland State returns seven of eight letterwinners from last season's team that advanced to the championship match of the Horizon League Tournament, including Horizon League Player of the Year Oihane Vicario and All-League honorees Sima Heren, Tereze Vevere and Bethany Yauch. In addition, Ella Franz, Filippa Frogner and Selma Tounsi also return for the Vikings, while fifth-year transfer Mikaela Konstantinova joined CSU prior to the fall season.

Following a four-tournament fall campaign, the trio of Sima Heren, Tereze Vevere and Oihane Vicario all have eight singles wins on the year, while Bethany Yauch and Ella Franz both enter the spring season with five wins. In doubles action, Vevere and Franz have a team-best 10-2 record on the year, while Heren and Yauch stand at 9-4 on the year.  

Singles Wins Milestones
Entering the spring season, senior Bethany Yauch has a team-high 60 career singles wins, as one of 13 Vikings all-time to reach the 60-win milestone. In addition, Tereze Vevere recorded her 50th career singles win during the fall season, entering dual match play with 51 career wins, while Oihane Vicario is just two wins shy of recording her 50th career singles win. Vicario would become the 19th Viking all-time to join the 50-win club. 

In The Record Book
A pair of Cleveland State doubles teams enter the spring season ranked in the CSU Career Record Book, as Ella Franz/Tereze Vevere rank sixth on the CSU Doubles Wins List with 26, while Sima Heren/Bethany Yauch are currently tied for ninth with 22 wins as a duo. With just one more win, each pair would move up one spot in the record book, while the Cleveland State duo of Selma Tounsi/Filippa Frogner is just six wins shy of also earning a spot in the top-10. 

#HLTennis Preseason Poll | Complete Release
Earlier this month the Vikings were selected as the preseason favorite in the Horizon League Poll, picking up 46 points and four first-place votes. This marks the first time that the Vikings were selected at the top of the preseason poll, while it marks the fifth time that Cleveland State has been tabbed to finish in the top-two.  

Head Coach Frank Polito
Frank Polito is in his sixth year at the hlem of the Vikings and his 12th year overall at Cleveland State, owning a 60-45 dual match record as head coach. During Polito's tenure, the Vikings have captured four Regular Season Horizon League titles and have made three #HLTennis Championship Match appearances.
