Vicario Named #HLTennis Player of the Year; Yauch Named Sportsmanship Honoree With Heren & Vevere Also Honored

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After finishing out regular season play last week and clinching the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Horizon League Tournament, the Cleveland State women's tennis team was honored with multiple postseason accolades from the league Thursday, with Oihane Vicario, Bethany Yauch, Sima Heren, and Tereze Vevere all earning postseason awards.

Vicario was named the 2023 Horizon League Player of the Year and First Team honoree, Yauch was named the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award winner and Second Team honoree, while Heren and Vevere both earned a spot on the All-League Second Team.

COMPLETE HORIZON LEAGUE RELEASE

This marks the fourth time that Cleveland State has claimed Player of the Year honors – and second time over the last three seasons – while it is the fifth time that a Viking has earned the Sportsmanship award, and first since 2010.

OIHANE VICARIO | SO | PLAYER OF THE YEAR & FIRST TEAM
Vicario picks up Player of the Year honors after posting a perfect 6-0 record against Horizon League opponents at No. 1 singles, marking her first undefeated #HLTennis slate. On the year, Vicario owns a 19-14 record, including a 14-7 mark when playing at the top of the lineup this spring.

During the season Vicario has picked up Horizon League Singles Player of the Week accolades five times – a league-best – and is currently on a seven-match win streak. Entering tournament play, Vicario is just one win shy of posting her second straight 20-win campaign, and would become the third Viking to do so this season.

Vicario has played sparingly in the doubles lineup this spring, most recently teaming with Filippa Frogner at No. 2 doubles to post a 2-1 record against #HLTennis opponents.

Vicario is the fourth Viking to be named Player of the Year, while she also becomes the fourth Viking to be named to the #HLTennis First Team multiple times during her career.

Vicario's Previous Honors: Co-Freshman of the Year (2022), First Team (2022)

BETHANY YAUCH | JR | HERB FOSTER SPORTSMANSHIP & SECOND TEAM
Yauch earns the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award and a spot on the All-League Second Team after finishing regular season play with a 20-13 overall record, including a 5-1 mark against Horizon League opponents. Yauch is one of two Vikings with 20+ wins on the season, and owns a 13-8 record this spring playing in the top half of the lineup.

Yauch is currently on a five-match win streak, and enters #HLTennis Tournament play with 53 career wins after reaching the 50-win milestone earlier this year.

In doubles, Yauch has teamed with Sima Heren this spring, posting a 12-6 record at the top of the lineup. As a three-time Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week – a league-best – the duo finished regular season play with a 3-1 record against league opponents.

Yauch is the fourth Viking to be named the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award honoree, and picks up all-league honors for the first time in her career.

SIMA HEREN | SO | SECOND TEAM
Heren has been named to the All-League Second Team after posting an 18-7 overall record on the year, including a 16-5 mark playing in the middle of the singles lineup this spring. Heren finished regular season play with a 5-1 record against Horizon League opponents, and enters #HLTennis Tournament play on a five-match win streak.

In doubles, Heren has teamed with Bethany Yauch this spring, posting a 12-6 record at the top of the lineup. As a three-time Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week – a league-best – the duo finished regular season play with a 3-1 record against league opponents.

Heren's Previous Honors: Second Team (2022)

TEREZE VEVERE | SO | SECOND TEAM
Vevere picks up Second Team accolades after finishing regular season play with a team-best 22-12 singles record, including a 13-8 mark playing in the middle part of the singles lineup this spring. Vevere has won back-to-back matches entering #HLTennis Tournament play, and finished the regular season with a 3-3 record against league opponents.

In doubles, Vevere has teamed with Ella Franz at the No. 3 spot this spring, owning a team-best 15-3 overall record. In dual matches only, the duo posted a 12-3 record, including a perfect 5-0 mark against #HLTennis opponents.

Entering #HLTennis Tournament play, Vevere and Franz are tied for 10th on the CSU Single-Season Doubles Wins list, just one win shy of moving into ninth place on the list.

Vevere becomes the 17th Viking all-time to earn Second Team honors.
