Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Earns 4-3 Victory Over Howard

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team wrapped up the weekend with an early morning match on Sunday, picking up a 4-3 victory over Howard in a neutral site match. With the win, the Vikings are now 8-6 overall this season.

"We were able to pick up a tough win today, and I'm proud of how the team bounced back with the quick turnaround from yesterday's match," head coach Frank Polito said. "We played well in doubles to give us some early momentum, and then it was great to see Filippa clinch the match for us on her singles court."

Cleveland State was once again able to pick up the early doubles point, earning wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Bethany Yauch and Sima Heren earned a 6-1 win at the top of the lineup, while Tereze Vevere and Ella Franz notched a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Howard answered with the first two singles points then, before Vevere picked up the first singles win of the day for the Vikings at the No. 3 spot. Vevere notched a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory to even the match at 2-2, and improve to a team-best 18-9 overall this season.

Heren then gave the Vikings a 3-2 advantage after picking up a win at No. 4 singles, earning a 7-6(4), 7-6(2) straight-set victory for her team-best 10th singles win this spring.

Cleveland State's clinching point came from Filippa Frogner at No. 5 singles, as she earned a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 victory to mark the Vikings' fourth point of the day.

The Vikings will now be off from competition until later this month, when they finally return to the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion to host Dayton on Saturday, March 25.
