Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Continues Spring Season With Trio Of Matches

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team will continue its 2023 spring slate with a trio of matches this weekend, traveling to Duquesne for a 5:00 p.m. match on Friday, January 27 and hosting Eastern Michigan (2:00 p.m.) and Ashland (6:00 p.m.) in a doubleheader on Sunday, January 29.

Last Time Out…
The Vikings opened the 2023 spring season by splitting their matches against Valparaiso and Toledo, including a 5-2 victory against the Crusaders to open the spring slate.

Vikings Sweep #HLTennis Weekly Awards
After a strong start to the spring season Cleveland State swept the Horizon League Weekly Awards, as Bethany Yauch was named the #HLTennis Singles Player of the Week and Filippa Frogner and Selma Tounsi were named the #HLTennis Doubles Team of the Week. Over the first weekend of dual match play, Yauch went 1-1 at No. 2 singles, while Frogner and Tounsi went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Cleveland State At The MMTP
Sunday's matches against Eastern Michigan and Ashland will be the second and third of just nine home matches inside the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion for Cleveland State this year. Over the last four years, the Vikings have gone 28-13 when playing inside the MMTP, including a 9-1 mark during the 2018-19 campaign.

Franz Earns First Collegiate Dual Match Singles Win
Ella Franz made her collegiate dual match debut last weekend, appearing at the No. 6 singles spot for the Vikings. Franz picked up her first collegiate singles win in the season opener against Valparaiso, earning a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory over Mia Bertino. Overall this year, Franz is tied for second on the team with eight singles wins.

Vikings With The Doubles Point
So far this spring, Cleveland State has earned the doubles point in both of its matches, sweeping the doubles courts against Valparaiso and earning wins on two of the three courts at Toledo. Entering the second week of dual match play, Filippa Frogner and Selma Tounsi are 2-0 at No. 2 doubles, while Ella Franz and Tereze Vevere are 2-0 at the No. 3 spot.

#HLTennis Preseason Poll
Earlier this month the Vikings were selected to finish second in the Horizon League Preseason Poll, collecting 42 points and two first-place votes. This marked the 11th year that the Horizon League has released a preseason tennis poll, with Cleveland State being selected as a top-three team eight out of the 11 years.

Vikings Post Strong Semester In The Classroom
With the 2022 Fall Semester in the books, the Vikings posted a strong semester in the classroom, finishing with a 3.65 team GPA for the term. In addition, two Vikings were named to the President's List (Filippa Frogner and Sima Heren), while four Vikings earned a spot on the Dean's List (Ella Franz, Selma Tounsi, Tereze Vevere, Bethany Yauch).

Head Coach Frank Polito
Frank Polito is in his fifth year at the helm of the Vikings and his 11th year overall at Cleveland State, owning a 46-38 dual match record as head coach. During Polito's tenure, the Vikings have captured four Regular Season Horizon League titles and have made two #HLTennis Championship Match appearances.
