Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Opens Spring Season With 5-2 Victory Over Valparaiso

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened up the 2023 spring campaign Saturday, picking up a 5-2 victory over Valparaiso to open the season 1-0.

"This was a solid first match for us, and a great way to start the spring season," head coach Frank Polito said. "We played very well in doubles today, and carried that momentum over to singles where we competed hard up and down the lineup. Now we need to get a quick recovery in before we are back on the courts for a tough matchup against Toledo tomorrow."

The Vikings got out to a strong start, picking up wins on all three doubles court to claim the first point of the match. At No. 1 doubles, Bethany Yauch and Sima Heren posted a 6-1 win, while Selma Tounsi/Filippa Frogner and Tereze Vevere/Ella Franz notched matching 6-2 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.

In singles action, Cleveland State got points at the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 positions.

Vevere and Franz picked up straight set singles wins on Saturday, Vevere posting a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles and Franz earning a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory at the No. 6 spot. Saturday's victory against Valparaiso marked the first collegiate dual match win for Franz.

Yauch added another point for the Vikings at the No. 2 spot with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory, while Heren posted a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles.

The Vikings will continue their opening weekend tomorrow (Sunday, January 22), traveling to Toledo for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
