Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Set To Host Valparaiso; Travel To Toledo To Open Spring Slate

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team will begin its 2023 spring campaign this weekend, hosting Valparaiso on Saturday, January 21 and traveling to Toledo on Sunday, January 22.

Saturday's match is slated for a 10:00 a.m. start inside the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion, while Sunday's match will begin at 1:00 p.m.

This weekend's matches will be the first of 21 scheduled matches for the Vikings this spring, and the first of five matches slated for the last two weeks of January.

Vikings At The MMTP
Saturday's match against Valparaiso will be the first of just nine home matches inside the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion for Cleveland State this year, five of which will come during the Vikings' first eight matches of the spring season. Over the last four years, the Vikings have gone 27-13 when playing inside the MMTP, including a 9-1 mark during the 2018-29 campaign.

The 2023 Roster | Complete Roster
Cleveland State returns six of seven letterwinners from last season's team that captured the Horizon League Regular Season Championship, including Horizon League Co-Freshman of the Year Oihane Vicario and All-League honoree Sima Heren. Joining this duo are junior returners Selma Tounsi and Bethany Yauch along with sophomores Filippa Frogner and Tereze Vevere. This returning group is joined by true freshman Ella Franz and sophomore transfer Avery Durham.

Entering The Spring Campaign | Complete Fall Stats
Tereze Vevere has a team-best 9-4 singles record, while Ella Franz and Bethany Yauch both recorded seven wins during the fall season. In addition, Filippa Frogner, Selma Tounsi and Oihane Vicario all enter the spring campaign with five singles wins on the year.

#HLTennis Preseason Poll | Complete Release
Earlier this month the Vikings were selected to finish second in the Horizon League Preseason Poll, collecting 42 points and two first-place votes. This marked the 11th year that the Horizon League has released a preseason tennis poll, with Cleveland State being selected as a top-three team eight out of 11 years.

Vikings Post Strong Semester In The Classroom
With the 2022 Fall Semester in the books, the Vikings posted a strong semester in the classroom, finishing with a 3.65 team GPA for the term. In addition, two Vikings were named to the President's List (Filippa Frogner and Sima Heren), while four Vikings earned a spot on the Dean's List (Ella Franz, Selma Tounsi, Tereze Vevere, Bethany Yauch).

Head Coach Frank Polito
Frank Polito is in his fifth year at the helm of the Vikings and his 11th year overall at Cleveland State, owning a 45-37 dual match record as head coach. During Polito's tenure, the Vikings have captured four Regular Season Horizon League titles and have made two #HLTennis Championship Match appearances.
