Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Trio Earns ITA Regional Rankings

TEMPE, Ariz. – Following one of the best seasons in recent history, the Cleveland State women's tennis team earned a pair of ITA Regional Rankings, as freshman Oihane Vicario earned a spot in the Singles Rankings and Klara Mrcela and Sima Heren earned a spot in the Doubles Rankings.

COMPLETE ITA REGIONAL RANKINGS

This marks the first time that the Vikings have appeared in the regional rankings, with Vicario ranking 17th on the singles list and Mrcela/Heren ranking 10th on the doubles list.

"This is a well deserved honor for Oihane, Klara and Sima as they worked really hard throughout the season on and off the court, and their efforts definitely paid off," head coach Frank Polito said. "This trio was part of a special team, and I'm proud of what they accomplished, and the mental and physical toughness they showed throughout the entire season."

Vicario finished the year with a 20-13 singles record – including a 14-8 mark at the top of the lineup during dual match play – ending the season as one of three Vikings to reach the 20-win plateau. Vicario posted a team-high tying six-match winstreak stretching between the end of the fall season and the first few matches of the spring campaign, and then ended the season on a four-match winstreak, with all four wins coming against league opponents.

At the conclusion of the season, Vicario was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year, and was a five-time #HLTennis Singles Player of the Week – leading all league players.

Mrcela and Heren posted a 10-5 doubles record on the season – including a perfect 2-0 mark against league opponents – spending the entire spring campaign at the No. 1 doubles spot.

The duo opened the spring season with three straight wins, earning Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week honors, before finishing dual match play with another three-match winstreak.

This trio led Cleveland State to its first-ever undefeated #HLTennis slate during the 2022 spring campaign, posting a 6-0 record en route to capturing the Horizon League Regular Season title.
