Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Remains Perfect In #HLTennis Play With 7-0 Victory Over Milwaukee

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team remained perfect in Horizon League play Friday evening, picking up a 7-0 victory over Milwaukee for the team's fourth sweep of the season. The Vikings now stand at 11-10 overall this season and 4-0 in league play.

"I thought this was a great win today, we fought hard during singles and doubles and stayed focused on what we had to do on the courts," head coach Frank Polito said. "I thought we set the tone of the match with our doubles, as No. 1 and No. 2 doubles played extremely well. The fight continued into singles then, as Klara and Oihane both picked up gutty come-from-behind wins, while we were able to battle for victories on every single court. Now we need to prepare for UIC, as it will be a quick turnaround to tomorrow's match against the Flames."

For the fourth straight match the Vikings were able to pick up the doubles point, as matching 6-1 victories at the top two spots gave Cleveland State the early 1-0 advantage. Klara Mrcela and Sima Heren picked up the win at No. 1 doubles, while Bethany Yauch and Selma Tounsi earned their team-leading 13th doubles win at the No. 2 spot.

Mrcela put the first singles point on the board for the Vikings after battling back from down 4-0 in the first set to claim a 6-4 victory in the opening frame, before eventually earning a 6-4, 2-0, ret. decision.

Tereze Vevere then put the Vikings up 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles, before Tounsi clinched the match for Cleveland State with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 4 spot. Vevere's win gave her 19 singles victories on the year, while it also kept her undefeated in league matches along with Mrcela and Yauch.

Yauch added to Cleveland State's advantage with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles – marking her team-leading 22nd victory of the year – before Oihane Vicario notched her 19th win of the season at the top of the lineup. After dropping the first set 6-0, Vicario stormed back to claim a 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 three-set victory to put the Vikings up 6-0.

The final point of the day came from Heren at No. 3 singles then, as she posted a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory to extend Cleveland State's current win streak to four straight matches.

Cleveland State will continue #HLTennis play tomorrow (Saturday, April 16), hosting UIC at 2:00 p.m. inside the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
