Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Earns 7-0 Victory Over Niagara

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team got back in the win column Wednesday evening, picking up a 7-0 victory over Niagara.

"I thought No. 1 and No. 2 doubles played well today, and really set the tone for us tonight," head coach Frank Polito said. "Beth did a great job today, she was playing despite being sick, and Klara did a great job playing higher in the lineup. Sima had a tough match, but bounced back in the third set tiebreaker to win the match, while Selma and Tereze took care of business on their courts. Oihane got on a roll late in her match and really outcompeted her opponent in the second set. Now we will get ready for a tough match against Xavier to close out our aggressive non-league slate that we have played this season."

The Vikings were able to pick up the early doubles point, earning matching 6-1 victories at the top two spots. Klara Mrcela and Sima Heren picked up the win at the top of the lineup, while Selma Tounsi and Bethany Yauch posted the victory at No. 2 doubles.

Tounsi and Yauch now own a team-best 10-7 doubles record overall this year, while Heren and Mrcela stand at 8-5.

Yauch then gave the Vikings a 2-0 advantage after picking up a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles, while Tereze Vevere earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 5 spot to give Cleveland State a 3-0 advantage.

With the win, Yauch improved to a team-best 18-9 overall this season, while Vevere now stands at 15-12 overall this year.

Mrcela clinched the match for the Vikings at No. 2 singles, posting a 6-1, 6-3 victory, before Tounsi earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot.

The Vikings were then able to close out the 7-0 victory with a 7-6, 6-1 victory from Oihane Vicario at the top of the lineup, and a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0(2) win from Heren at the No. 3 spot. With her win, Vicario now owns a 16-11 overall record this season, and picked up her 10th singles win of the spring season.

Cleveland State will close out its non-league schedule on Sunday, March 23, traveling to Xavier for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
