Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Earns 4-3 Victory At Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team returned to action Thursday afternoon, picking up a 4-3 victory at Eastern Michigan to remain perfect during the month of February. With the win, the Vikings also improved to 5-1 on the year.

"I am so proud of this team and the match we put together on the courts today, we really needed to play strong throughout the lineup and everyone did their part," head coach Frank Polito said. "After a slow start in doubles, we were able to regroup and come out strong in singles, winning five first sets. We are constantly getting better and better every match, and I can't wait to see what is ahead for this team."

All four of Cleveland State's points came during singles action, as they dropped the doubles point for just the second time this spring.

Bethany Yauch put the Vikings on the board first, notching a 6-4, 6-3 victory over EMU's Emma-Lou Pommiers at No. 5 singles.

The Vikings were then able to even the match at 2-2 after Selma Tounsi picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot over Isabelle Popma.

Oihane Vicario then gave Cleveland State its first lead of the match at 3-2, following a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win at the top of the singles lineup over EMU's Luisa Pelayo.

The Eagles responded with a win at the No. 4 spot then, tying the match at 3-3 with the lone match left on court at No. 2 singles.

After splitting the first two sets, Sima Heren was able to clinch the match for the Vikings after earning a commanding 6-2 win during the third frame, giving the Vikings their first win over Eastern Michigan.

Through the first six matches, Vicario now has a team-best 5-1 singles record – playing all six matches at the top of the lineup – while Vicario, Yauch and Tereze Vevere own matching 11-6 records overall this season.

The Vikings will now return home for a pair of matches on Saturday, February 12, hosting Miami (Ohio) at 10:00 a.m. and Slippery Rock at 3:00 p.m.
