Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Earns 5-2 Victory Over Duquesne

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened the month of February on Sunday afternoon, picking up a 5-2 victory over Duquesne inside the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. With the win, the Vikings are now 4-1 on the season.

"This was a nice win for us today, we had a lot of different people stepping up throughout the doubles and singles lineup which was great to see," head coach Frank Polito said. "Our third doubles team played really well at the end of their set to get the clinching point for us, while Klara and Beth set the tone early on in singles. Tereze stepped up and did a nice job clinching the match with a well played tiebreaker, and Sima and Selma battled really hard in their matches, but came up a little short."

For the fourth time this season the Vikings were able to pick up the early doubles point, as the No. 1 duo of Sima Heren and Klara Mrcela earned a 6-3 victory, while Filippa Frogner and Oihane Vicario picked up a 7-5 win at the No. 3 spot to clinch the early advantage.

The Vikings were then able to add to their lead throughout the first few singles matches, as Mrcela put CSU up 2-0 after earning a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, and Bethany Yauch posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 spot to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead.

Tereze Vevere then clinched the match for Cleveland State, earning a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory at No. 6 singles, to put the Vikings back in the win column.

Cleveland State's final point came from Vicario then, as she battled for a 6-7(8), 6-2, 6-3 victory at the top of the lineup.

Through the first three weeks of the spring season Vevere and Vicario lead the Vikings with matching 4-1 singles records, while the duos of Selma Tounsi/Yauch and Heren/Mrcela own 4-1 marks in doubles action.

Cleveland State will return to the courts next weekend, hosting Miami (Ohio) and Slippery Rock on Saturday, February 12.
