Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Opens Home Slate With Trio Of Matches

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team will open its home portion of the 2022 spring campaign this weekend, hosting a trio of matches at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. The Vikings will host Western Michigan and St. Bonaventure on Saturday, January 29, before hosting West Virginia on Sunday, January 30.

Vikings At The MMTP
This weekend's matches will open a 14-match home slate for the Vikings during the 2022 spring season, as they will be calling the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion home for the seventh year. Since it's opening in 2016, the Vikings have posted a 42-15 record at the MMTP, including a pair of 9-1 campaigns during 2017 and 2019.

Last Time Out…
The Vikings picked up a 4-3 victory over Dayton in their season opener, sweeping the doubles matches and picking up three singles wins. Cleveland State's singles wins on the match came from Oihane Vicario (No. 1), Sima Heren (No. 2) and Tereze Vevere (No. 6). This marked the third time over the last four years that the Vikings have been victorious in their season opener.

Freshmen Shine In Debut
Last weekend's contest at Dayton marked the first collegiate dual match for the freshmen quartet of Oihane Vicario, Sima Heren, Tereze Vevere, and Filippa Frogner, with all four picking up wins in their respective matches. Vicario, Heren and Vevere represented CSU's three singles wins on the day, while Heren, Vicario and Frogner earned wins on their respective doubles courts.

Vicario Named #HLTennis Singles Player of the Week
After notching a 7-5, 6-1 victory at the top of the lineup against Dayton, freshman Oihane Vicario was named the Horizon League Singles Player of the Week. With the win, Vicario improved to 7-5 on the season, including a 1-0 mark at the No. 1 spot.

Heren & Mrcela Earn #HLTennis Doubles Team of the Week
Cleveland State's No. 1 doubles team of Sima Heren and Klara Mrcela picked up Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week honors, giving the Vikings a sweep of the first weekly accolades this spring. Heren and Mrcela picked up a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, helping the Vikings earn the early doubles point against the Flyers. Last weekend's match marked the first time that Heren and Mrcela were in the doubles lineup together.

2022 #HLTennis Preseason Poll
Earlier this week, the Vikings were tabbed to finish third in the highly competitive seven-team Horizon League field, collecting 35 points to finish behind preseason favorite UIC and Youngstown State. This marks the 10th year that the Horizon League has released a preseason poll, with the Vikings selected to finish as a top-three team for the seventh time.
