Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Opens Spring Season With 4-3 Victory At Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened up the 2022 spring season Saturday, picking up a 4-3 victory over Dayton.

"This was a great way to start the spring season, we had great fight from top to bottom throughout our doubles and singles lineups," head coach Frank Polito said. "We played some really good doubles today, and the freshmen had a great outing in the first dual match of their collegiate careers. I'm also proud of how Klara battled during her match today, and I'm looking forward to seeing what this team can accomplish this spring."

The Vikings were able to earn the early 1-0 advantage after picking up the doubles point, sweeping all three doubles courts. At the top of the lineup Klara Mrcela and Sima Heren picked up a 6-4 victory, while Bethany Yauch and Selma Tounsi (No. 2) and Oihane Vicario and Filippa Frogner (No. 3) picked up matching 6-2 wins at their respective matches.

Dayton was able to even the score picking up the first singles point at the No. 4 spot, but Cleveland State responded with a pair of wins at the top two spots in the singles lineup.

Vicario picked up a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles, before Heren earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 2 spot, giving Cleveland State a 3-1 lead in the match.

After Dayton picked up another win at No. 5 singles, Tereze Vevere clinched the match for the Vikings, earning a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory at the No. 6 spot.

The quartet of Vicario, Heren, Vevere, and Frogner were all making their CSU dual match debuts on Saturday, picking up wins in all of their respective matches.

Cleveland State will now continue the spring campaign next weekend, hosting a trio of matches against Western Michigan (January 29), St. Bonaventure (January 29) and West Virginia (January 30) at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
