Women’s Tennis Earns 7-0 Sweep At IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team picked up its third straight sweep on Saturday, opening a two-match series at IUPUI with a 7-0 victory. The win is the fourth straight for the Vikings, as they remain perfect during the month of April.

"This was a nice team win for us today, and a good way to keep our momentum going that we have been building over the last few weeks," head coach Frank Polito said. "Our No. 3 doubles team set the tone for us, and then our No. 2 team followed suit and helped us get out to the early lead in doubles."

Cleveland State was able to pick up the early doubles point for the fourth straight match on Saturday, earning wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Blanche Lenoan and Kateryna Avram earned a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Bethany Yauch and Gaby Schoenberg posted a 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot.

With their win at No. 2 doubles, Lenoan and Avram are now 10-4 on the season, and tied for eighth on the CSU Team Doubles Wins List with 20 victories as a tandem. The win also put Lenoan into a tie for 10th place on the CSU Individual Doubles Wins List with 56 career doubles wins.

Miruna Vasilescu remained perfect in Horizon League singles play with a straight-set win at the top of the lineup, as she improved to 12-2 overall this year and 7-0 in league play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Klara Mrcela won her third straight singles match at the No. 3 spot then, posting a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Cleveland State's clinching point came from Kateryna Avram at No. 6 singles, as she picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory for her first league win of the season.

Lenoan extended her current singles win streak to six straight matches on Saturday, posting a 6-4, 7-5 victory at the No. 2 spot.

Selma Tounsi and Yauch earned the final two singles wins against IUPUI, Tounsi with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles and Yauch with a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0(6) win at the No. 4 spot.

"Miruna was locked in once again giving us a quick 2-0 advantage, while it was also nice to see Klara come out and play the way I know she can. The freshmen played really tough today and showed some grit in both of their matches, while Kate played some of her best tennis today and Blanche kept things rolling. With the quick turnarounds this season, we will get back out there tomorrow and hopefully continue playing the way we were today," Polito said.

The Vikings will close out the two-match series against the Jaguars tomorrow (Sunday, April 11), with first serve set for 2:30 p.m.
