Women’s Tennis Picks Up 7-0 Victory Over Oakland

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team picked up its first Horizon League victory of the 2021 campaign Saturday, earning a 7-0 win over Oakland.

"It was nice to get our first league win, we have been working really hard this season and we were finally able to come out on the winning side today," head coach Frank Polito said. "I thought we were locked in from start to finish throughout both doubles and singles play today. It was nice to see Blanche come back in her match and pull out the win, while it was also nice to see Klara pick up a win on her court. Klara played really well today, and it was nice to see her playing at the level she is capable of after finally getting healthy. Now we have a quick turnaround before tomorrow's series finale with Oakland."

The Vikings were able to get out to the early 1-0 lead after doubles play, as Kateryna Avram and Blanche Lenoan posted a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, and the duo of Bethany Yauch and Gaby Schoenberg earned a default win at the No. 3 spot.

With their win at No. 2 doubles, Avram and Lenoan now own a team-best 8-4 record this season, while they are just one win shy of earning a spot on the CSU Doubles Wins List.

Cleveland State was able to start singles play with a 2-0 advantage after a default win at No. 6 singles, and then quickly added to the lead with wins at the No. 4 and No. 1 spots.

Yauch earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles to give the Vikings a 3-0 advantage, while Miruna Vasilescu clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the top of the lineup. With her win at No. 1 singles, Vasilescu improved to 5-0 in Horizon League play, while she also now owns a team-best 10-2 record on the year.

Selma Tounsi then gave the Vikings a 5-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, while Klara Mrcela posted her first victory of the season with a 7-5, 6-4 decision at the No. 3 spot.

The final point of the match came from Lenoan at No. 2 singles, as she pulled out a 6-7(4), 6-1, 1-0(5) victory to improve to 9-3 overall this season and clinch the 7-0 sweep for the Vikings
