Women’s Tennis Earns 6-1 Victory Over St. Bonaventure

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team took a break from Horizon League play on Saturday, picking up a 6-1 victory over St. Bonaventure.

"This was a great team effort today and a good non-league win for us," head coach Frank Polito said. "I thought the No. 1 and No. 3 teams came out great in doubles to set the tone for us, and we were able to keep that momentum going throughout singles. Now we have to get back to work at practice this week as we return to league play against Oakland next weekend."

The Vikings were able to pick up the early doubles point with wins at all three spots. Cleveland State posted matching 6-2 wins at No. 1 (Klara Mrcela/Miruna Vasilescu) and No. 3 doubles (Bethany Yauch/Gaby Schoenberg), while Kateryna Avram and Blanche Lenoan battled for a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot.

With their win at No. 2 doubles, Avram and Lenoan now have a team-best 7-4 record this season, while Mrcela and Vasilescu stand at 5-2 on the year.

Avram was then able to give the Vikings a quick 2-0 advantage after the start of singles play, as she posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Buse Gunay at No. 6 singles.

The Vikings were then able to extend their lead to 3-0 after a win at No. 4 singles, as Bethany Yauch picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Andrea Roque.

Saturday's clinching point came from Vasilescu at the top of the lineup, as she earned a 6-0, 7-5 win over Sofia Franco. With the win, Vasilescu now has a team-best 9-2 singles record, and has won seven straight matches.

Cleveland State also picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, as Lenoan posted a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot and Selma Tounsi earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 spot. With the win at No. 2 singles, Lenoan improved to 8-3 overall this season.

Cleveland State will return to Horizon League play next weekend, hosting Oakland on Saturday, April 3 and Sunday, April 4.
