Women's Tennis Drops 5-2 Match Against UIC

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team wrapped up its first weekend of Horizon League play Sunday, dropping a 5-2 match against UIC.

"This was another tough loss for us today, although we struggled in singles today, I thought we played really well in doubles," head coach Frank Polito said. "Our top two doubles teams played very well and both teams did what they needed to do in order to pick up wins on their courts. Miruna did a great job at the top of the singles lineup for us again today – even after having to adjust to her opponent's new game plan. Even though she didn't get the win, I thought Blanche battled once again today, and did a great job of staying on the court as long as she could."

The Vikings were able to gain the early 1-0 lead for the second straight day, picking up wins at the top two spots to pick up the doubles point against the Flames. Miruna Vasilescu and Klara Mrcela posted a 6-3 win at the top of the lineup, while Blanche Lenoan and Kateryna Avram recorded a matching 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.

With the win on Sunday, Avram and Lenoan now own a team-best 6-2 doubles record this season, while Mrcela and Vasilescu improved to 3-1 on the year.

Cleveland State's lone singles point came at the top of the lineup, as Vasilescu picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over UIC's Tamara Malazonia. Vasilescu finished the first weekend of league play with a perfect 2-0 record at No. 1 singles, as she improved to a team-best 6-2 on the season.

The Vikings will hit the road to continue Horizon League play next weekend, traveling to Youngstown State on Saturday, March 20 and Sunday, March 21.
