Women’s Tennis Falls To Eastern Michigan In 2021 Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened up the 2021 campaign Saturday afternoon, dropping a hard fought 4-3 contest against Eastern Michigan.

Saturday's match marked the first competition for the Vikings in 325 days.

"Overall I thought we did a nice job of getting back on the courts today after having such a long layoff from competition," head coach Frank Polito said. "We dropped a close doubles point to begin the match, which was really a momentum changer. I thought Miruna and Beth played really well in singles and doubles today, and gave us a lot of energy at the top of the lineup. I know this team is capable of doing big things, and as the season progresses I think we are going to see that come to fruition."

Despite dropping the doubles point, the Vikings were able to pick up a win at the top spot, as Miruna Vasilescu and Bethany Yauch combined for a 7-5 victory at No. 1 doubles in their Cleveland State debuts.

Cleveland State also picked up three singles wins on the day at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 spots. At the top of the lineup, Vasilescu picked up her first singles win in a Cleveland State uniform, earning a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Eagles.

Yauch earned her first collegiate singles win at the No. 2 spot then, as she battled for a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Cleveland State's final singles point came from Blanche Lenoan at No. 4 singles, as she posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Lenoan's win at No. 4 singles marked the 46th of her career, as she is now just four wins shy of recording 50 career singles wins.

Cleveland State will return to action next weekend, when the Vikings travel to Miami (OH) on Saturday, February 6.
