Women's Tennis Opens Viking Invitational

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team returned to action Friday, beginning the three-day Viking Invitational in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.

"It was great to play in our home facility today and kick off our fall tournament," head coach Frank Polito said. "We came out and played some really good doubles to start the day, and I loved how much fight we all had on the courts. Klara and Lara played some aggressive doubles, and Klara carried that into her singles match where she played some smart tennis to pick up a quality win. I was really impressed by Gaby in her singles match, she got off to a slow start, but was able to fight back and get the win."

During doubles play, Cleveland State picked up two wins on the first day of play, as Klara Mrcela and Lara Prosenjak teamed up for a 6-4 victory and Prinkle Singh and Blanche Lenoan captured a 6-1 victory. Both doubles wins for the Vikings came over tandems from Xavier.

The Vikings also picked up four singles victories to open the tournament, as Gaby Schoenberg, Mrcela and Lenoan all picked up their second wins of the year, while Kateryna Avram notched her first singles victory of the season.

Mrcela earned a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(6) victory over UConn's Julieanne Bou, while Schoenberg earned a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(6) win over Lai of UConn, and Lenoan notched a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 victory over UConn's Caroline Cook.

Avram picked up her win over Elizabeth Kozyi of UConn, notching a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

Play at the Viking Invitational will continue tomorrow (Saturday, October 5), with one round of doubles and one round of singles.
