Women’s Tennis Has Strong Showing On Second Day Of WMU Super Challenge

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team had another successful day at the WMU Super Challenge on Saturday, winning four singles matches and four doubles matches.

In singles play, the Vikings got victories from Isabella Spindler, Klara Mrcela, Kateryna Avram, and Sian Payne.

Spindler picked up a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Indiana's Michelle McKamey, marking the 47th singles win of her career. Mrcela earned a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Ball State's Peyton Gollhofer, while Avram posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Western Michigan's Kristina Tiraspolsky, and Payne notched a 6-4, 7-5 win against Jeryn Jack from Western Michigan. Avram's victory marked her team-leading sixth singles win of the fall.

"Overall, we had the most complete day of tennis that we have played this fall," head coach Frank Polito said. "Klara played an awesome match today, and it was great to see what she is capable of on the singles court. Kate is one of those players who just goes to work every time she hits the court, giving everything she has in every single match. It was great to see Isabella playing well today and getting back to her usual form, and even though she didn't win, Lauren played a very good match that bodes well for the rest of the year."

In doubles action, the duo of Gaby Schoenberg and Lara Prosenjak picked up two wins on the day, while the tandems of Avram and Mrcela and Spindler and Lenoan each picked up one win on the day.

Schoenberg and Prosenjak picked up their wins against Ball State (6-1) and Western Michigan (6-4), while Avram and Mrcela earned a 7-6(3) victory against Indiana and Spindler and Lenoan notched a 6-1 win against a Lewis duo.

"We also had a good day in doubles today, including Gaby and Lara playing some great tennis in their matches. They were able to get off to a quick start and then never looked back. Kate and Klara played an excellent match against Indiana, as they were down 1-3 in the tiebreaker, and then rattled off six straight points to pick up the win. Our doubles has improved so much from the first tournament of the fall season, and the hard work is finally paying off, which is great to see," Polito said.

The Vikings will wrap up play at the WMU Super Challenge tomorrow (Sunday, November 4), with one round of singles.
