Women’s Tennis Has Strong Day At West Virginia Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team had another successful day at the Martha Thorn Mountaineer Invitational Saturday, picking up three doubles wins and three singles wins.

Gaby Schoenberg and Lara Prosenjak picked up two of the doubles wins Saturday, earning a 6-3 victory over a West Virginia duo and a 7-6(1) win over a Delaware tandem.

The third doubles win came from the team of Kateryna Avram and Klara Mrcela, as they earned a 6-3 victory over West Virginia.

"Our doubles play was awesome today, we made some huge strides from yesterday's matches and from the beginning of the season," head coach Frank Polito said. "I'm so proud of how these teams have continued to work together and improve week after week, and hopefully we can continue that throughout the rest of the fall season."

In singles play, Avram, Mrcela and Prosenjak picked up wins, all of which came against Duquesne. Avram earned a 7-6(8), 6-4 victory over Laurel Shymansky, Mrcela earned a win after her opponent retired, and Prosenjak battled for a 1-6, 7-5, 1-0(8) victory after coming back from 1-6, 1-5 down.

"We really turned around our singles play today, and it was nice to see Klara and Lara pick up wins. As usual, Kate played a steady match and was able to get a win. I think we are at a good place with our singles play, and I'm looking forward to closing out the weekend strong tomorrow," Polito said.
