KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team returned to action Saturday afternoon, falling at Western Michigan, 7-0. The Vikings are now 3-4 on the season.
"I thought the team played very tough today, and we had some chances in almost every match, but we just didn't take advantage of them," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "Even though we lost, if we fight like this every match, we will accomplish our goals at the end of the year. I'm so proud of this team and their effort on the court today."
Although the Vikings dropped the doubles point, the No. 3 doubles team of Princess Gbadamosi and Mathilde Orange was putting up a good fight until their match was halted. This duo was knotted at 5-5 against their Bronco opponents, Meika Ashby and Denise Azcui.
Western Michigan was able to pick up straight set wins in five of the six singles matches then, as Aleksandra Golawska was the only Viking to push her match past two sets. Golawska, who was playing at No. 5 singles, was able to pick up a 6-3 win in the first set before dropping the second set by a matching 6-3 score. Golawska and Western Michigan's Meika Ashby then played a tiebreaker, in which WMU was able to pick up an exciting 13-11 victory for the match sweep.
The Vikings will wrap up play during the month of February tomorrow (Sunday, February 28), playing at Michigan State in a 10:00 a.m. contest.
