WESTLAKE, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened its spring season Friday evening, dropping a 6-1 match to Toledo.
"I thought this was a very competitive match for a season opener, both teams competed well today and played a great match," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "All of the matches were close, we just couldn't close them out. I would love to have a rematch after we have a few more days of practice under our belts. Isabella had a great first collegiate match, picking up a singles and doubles win, and it was great to have her spark of energy. Hopefully we will be able to build on this tomorrow and continue what I hope will be a great spring season."
Picking up Cleveland State's lone singles victory on the match was freshman Isabella Spindler - who joined the Vikings from Clarkston, Michigan for the spring season. Spindler was playing at No. 4 singles for the Vikings, posting a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Toledo's Claire Aleck.
Spindler was also part of Cleveland State's No. 3 doubles team with Aleksandra Golawska, picking up a 6-1 win during doubles play.
The Vikings will continue their opening weekend tomorrow, hosting Duquesne at 3:00 p.m. Tomorrow's match will be played at Mayfield Village Racquet Club (6685 Beta Drive | Mayfield Village, Ohio | 44143).
