BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team continued play at the UB Invitational Saturday, paced by newcomer Katy Quillin who went 2-0 in singles play to earn a spot in the Singles Flight E Championship.
"I'm so happy for Katy, that she is playing for a singles and doubles title tomorrow just goes to show how hard she has been working at practice throughout the first few weeks of the season," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "In the other singles brackets we had a bit of a rough day, but learned a lot, which will help us down the road in league play this spring. Hopefully tomorrow we can come out strong and bring home some titles."
Quillin, who entered the weekend with just one singles win so far this fall, notched back-to-back wins in Flight E singles action to earn a spot in the championship match tomorrow. In the opening round, Quillin earned a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Duquesne's Zuzanna Stelmaszak and then posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Allison Roma from Binghamton in the semifinals.
Quillin and Victoria Bensimon will also be playing in doubles finals action tomorrow, as the duo earned a spot in the Flight E championship match.
The Vikings were able to post two additional singles wins on Saturday, as Bensimon earned a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win in Flight C action, and Aleksandra Golawska posted a 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-1 win in Flight D play.
Cleveland State will wrap up play at the UB Invitational tomorrow (Sunday, October 10) with the final rounds of singles and doubles action beginning at 9:00 a.m.
