AKRON, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened their fall season Friday, participating in the Akron Shootout. Friday's action included one round of singles and one round of doubles in the hidden dual tournament.
"I thought we fought really hard today and I don't think the final scores showed how well we competed on the court in both singles and doubles action," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "Hopefully we can continue improving tomorrow and work on some of the things that we made note of today. Overall I was proud of how hard we played and I thought it was a really good start to the season for us."
Senior Mathilde Orange was the lone Viking to pick up a singles win for the Vikings on the first day of the Akron Shootout, posting a 7-5, 6-7 (5), 10-5 victory over UMBC's Alice Taylor at No. 3 singles.
The Cleveland State doubles team of freshman Morgan Nix and junior Victoria Bensimon was also victorious Friday, notching a 6-2 win over the Youngstown State tandem of Julianna Heino and Annina Brendel at No. 2 doubles.
The Vikings will continue play at the Akron Shootout tomorrow (Saturday, September 19), playing one round of singles and one round of doubles beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Outdoor Tennis Facility on the University of Akron campus. In the event of inclement weather, play will be moved indoors to the LaTuchie Tennis Center (3200 Darrow Road, Stow, Ohio 44224).
