ABILENE, Texas – The Cleveland State women's tennis team earned its first sweep of the season Sunday afternoon, posting a 9-0 victory at McMurry. Since they were playing at McMurry, the two teams played according to Division II rules, with each doubles match counting for one point.
"This was a good day for us to play our first outdoor match of the season, and it was even better that we were able to come away with the victory," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We played a well-coached and disciplined doubles team in McMurry, making us work for all three doubles points. We were then able to control play throughout the matches at the bottom of the singles lineup, and battled for wins in the top half of the singles lineup, earning the hard fought victory."
For the first time this season the Vikings were able to sweep the doubles matches, picking up three quick points and getting out to an early 3-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles, Alex Power and Ellen Folkers earned a 9-8 (2) victory, while Mathilde Orange and Princess Gbadamosi posted a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles, and Kara Sherwood and Victoria Bensimon cruised to an 8-3 victory at the No. 3 spot.
Sherwood and Orange were able to pick up their second singles victories of the weekend against McMurry, Sherwood at No. 2 singles and Orange at No. 3 singles. Sherwood posted a 6-1, 6-3 win, while Orange won a 6-2, 6-0 decision.
Lauren Golick and Bensimon were able to get back in the win column in their respective singles matches, Golick with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the top of the lineup, and Bensimon with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles.
Cleveland State's final two points came from Gbadamosi and Folkers, as Gbadamosi earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles and Folkers cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 spot.
The Vikings will close out their three-match Texas roadswing on Thursday (March 13), taking on Stephen F. Austin at 5:00 p.m. EST.
